A 30-Day Pool Training Plan: Get Noticeably Better in a Month
Most players "practice" by hitting balls around. That feels good but builds very little. This plan gives every session a job. Four weeks, three or four sessions a week, about 45 minutes each. Track your scores in the free practice log so you can see the gains.
Before you start
- Get the basics right: a straight cue, a good tip and decent chalk. A warped house cue fights every drill. If you need one, see playing cues on Amazon and our cue buying guide.
- Bring a way to measure: a notebook or your phone. Every drill below has a score.
- Warm up the same way every time: ten minutes of easy straight-in shots.
Week 1: a straight stroke
Everything else is built on a stroke that goes where you aim it.
- Straight-back drill: cue ball on the head spot, shoot it straight up the table over the middle diamonds. It should come straight back to your tip. Ten tries; count how many return within a ball's width.
- Bottle drill: stroke into the neck of an empty bottle lying on the table without touching the sides. Twenty strokes.
- Stop shots: object ball one diamond away, straight in. Stop the cue ball dead. Ten in a row, then move back a diamond.
A stroke trainer or a phone video from behind (see how to film your stroke) shows exactly where your cue wanders.
Week 2: aim and cut shots
- The cut-shot ladder: object ball near a corner pocket, cue ball at 15, 30, 45 and 60 degree angles. Five shots each. Write down the angle you miss most.
- Long straight-ins: full table length, ten shots.
- Warm up your eye between sessions with the aim trainer.
Week 3: cue ball control
- Draw to the line: draw back one, two, then three diamonds. A training cue ball with dots shows exactly where you hit it.
- Follow to the rail: same setup, follow the cue ball to the far rail and stop it within a ball's width.
- Stun and 90 degrees: on a half-ball cut, send the cue ball off at 90 degrees (see the 90-degree carom).
Week 4: patterns and pressure
- Three-ball runouts: scatter three balls, ball in hand, run them in order. Ten racks.
- Play the ghost: 9-Ball race to 5 against an imaginary player who never misses: miss once and the ghost wins that rack.
- Pressure finish: end every session needing to make five shots in a row before you leave.
