How to Clean a Pool Table: Cloth, Rails, Pockets and Balls
A clean table plays faster and truer, and the cloth lasts years longer. Chalk dust and dirt act like sandpaper on the cloth and slow the balls down. Here is how to clean every part of a pool table.
Brush the cloth
- Use a soft brush made for billiard cloth, never a stiff household broom.
- Brush in straight, short strokes from the foot of the table toward the head, the way the cloth's nap runs. Don't scrub in circles: it pills the cloth.
- Brush the chalk out from under the cushion edges first, then the bed.
- Sweep the dust into a pocket or onto a dustpan at the end.
Vacuum (carefully)
A handheld vacuum with a brush attachment picks up what the brush loosens. Use low suction and keep the nozzle just above the cloth; strong suction can stretch the cloth and pull it loose from the slate.
Spills and stains
- Blot, don't rub. Soak up a spill right away with a dry cloth or paper towel.
- For a sticky spill, dab with a cloth barely dampened with cold water and a drop of mild dish soap, then blot dry. Never soak the cloth: water can warp the slate backing and leave rings.
- Chalk smudges usually brush out. Leave stubborn stains alone rather than scrubbing the cloth bald.
Rails, pockets and the frame
Wipe the wooden rails and frame with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry them. Use wood polish only on the wood, never near the cloth. Empty the pockets now and then and wipe the leather or rubber with a dry cloth.
Clean the balls
Dirty balls drag chalk around and stick together on contact. Wash them in warm water with a little mild soap, dry them right away, and buff them with a soft cloth. Ball cleaner and polish make them look and roll like new. Never use a dishwasher.
How often?
- After every session: a quick brush.
- Weekly (home table): brush and light vacuum; wipe the rails.
- Monthly: clean the balls and empty the pockets.
- Always: cover the table when it is not being used, and keep drinks off the rails.
