Pool Leagues Explained: APA, USA Pool League (BCA) and VNEA
A pool league is the easiest way to play regularly, meet the local players and get better fast. Most leagues play one night a week at a local bar or pool room, as a team, with a handicap system so newer players can win too.
How a league night works
- Teams of about five to eight players meet another team at one of their home rooms.
- Each night is a set of individual matches between players from the two teams, and the team with more wins takes the night.
- Results count toward standings over a session (often 12 to 16 weeks), followed by playoffs.
- Most leagues play 8-Ball; many also have 9-Ball divisions.
The big leagues
| League | Handicap | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| APA (American Poolplayers Association) | Skill levels; races change with each player's level | The largest amateur league, very beginner-friendly |
| USA Pool League (formerly BCA Pool League) | Rating-based handicaps | Standard tournament rules, strong competitive divisions |
| VNEA | Varies by local charter | Bar-box 8-Ball, big team events |
There are also many local and independent leagues, often Fargo-rated, run by a pool room or a group of directors.
How handicaps work
Each player has a skill rating that moves with their results. The handicap changes the race, so a newer player might need 2 games while a strong player needs 5. In APA, teams also have a cap on the total of their players' skill levels in a night, so a team can't stack its best players. In rating-based leagues, races come from the gap between ratings, much like our Fargo race calculator.
The road to Las Vegas
Most big leagues end their year with national or world championships in Las Vegas. Teams and players qualify through their local playoffs and regional events. See the dates in our major pool events calendar.
How to join
- Ask at your local pool room or bar: the person behind the counter knows which leagues play there. Find rooms near you in our pool hall directory.
- Search for your city plus the league name. Each league has a local operator who places new players on teams.
- Join a team that needs a player, or start one with friends.
League rules vs. tournament rules
League rules can differ from the rules at open tournaments, especially on fouls and calling shots. Before your first open event, read bar rules vs. tournament rules and what to expect at your first tournament. Then find a tournament tonight.
