15 Pool Tips That Improve Your Game Fast

For players2 min readUpdated October 2026By Billiard Action Time

You don't need to change everything to play better. These fifteen tips fix the most common problems we see at weekly tournaments. Pick two or three and work on them this week.

Stroke

  1. Stay down. Keep your head still until the object ball is on its way. Jumping up is the number one reason for missed easy shots.
  2. Loosen your grip. A tight grip steers the cue. Hold it like a bird: firm enough not to let go, loose enough not to hurt it.
  3. Follow through. Let the cue travel a few inches past where the cue ball was. A short, jabbing stroke is hard to repeat.
  4. Pause at the back. A short pause before the final stroke stops you from rushing. See pool basics.

Aim and speed

  1. Aim at the ghost ball, not the object ball. Find where the cue ball has to be at contact. Train it with the aim trainer and read how to aim.
  2. Use the least spin you can. Center ball and the right speed get you most places. Spin adds errors. See English explained.
  3. Most misses are speed misses. Hitting too hard makes balls rattle and sends the cue ball far from where you want it. Practice your lag with the lag challenge.

Thinking

  1. Plan before you shoot. Look at the next two balls, not just the one in front of you. In 8-Ball, read the whole table first. See 8-Ball strategy.
  2. Stay on the right side of the ball. Leave yourself a small angle on the next shot, not a straight-in; angles let you move the cue ball.
  3. Break up clusters early, while you still have other balls to shoot.
  4. Play safe when the shot is bad. A good safety beats a hopeful miss. Learn three easy ones in safety play.
  5. Know the rules. Fouls you don't know about cost games. Take the rules quiz.

Practice and the mental game

  1. Practice with a purpose. Twenty minutes of a drill with a score beats an hour of hitting balls. Try the 7 drills and track them in the practice log.
  2. Use the same pre-shot routine every time, so it holds up under pressure. See beating tournament nerves.
  3. Play better players, and play tournaments. You learn more losing to someone better than beating someone worse. Find a tournament this weekend.
