12 Common Pool Mistakes Beginners Make (and How to Fix Each One)

For players2 min readUpdated October 2026By Billiard Action Time

Most beginners miss for the same handful of reasons. Fix these twelve and you'll win more games without changing anything else.

  1. Hitting too hard. Speed makes everything worse: misses, scratches, rattled pockets. Most shots need medium speed. Practice making balls at "just enough" speed.
  2. Jumping up. Lifting your head as you shoot moves the cue. Stay down until the ball drops.
  3. Gripping the cue tightly. A tight grip steers the tip. Loosen up: see how to improve your stroke.
  4. Aiming the cue ball at the object ball's center on cut shots. You have to hit the side of the object ball. Learn the ghost ball method in how to aim in pool.
  5. Using English on every shot. Side spin makes the cue ball squirt off line. Use center ball unless you need spin for position.
  6. Not chalking. Chalk before every shot. A miscue is almost always a dry tip. Good chalk holds better than the bar's old cube.
  7. Shooting the easiest ball, not the right ball. In 8-Ball, think about which ball sets up the next one. See 8-Ball patterns.
  8. Ignoring the cue ball. Decide where it should stop before every shot. See position play.
  9. A sloppy bridge. A loose bridge lets the cue wobble. Press your hand into the cloth; see bridges and stance.
  10. Bad racks. Balls must be frozen together. A thin rack template gives a tight rack every time.
  11. Using a warped house cue. Roll it on the table first; if it wobbles, pick another, or bring your own (see what a pool cue costs).
  12. Never practicing on purpose. Playing games isn't practice. Try the 30-day training plan.

Fix one at a time. Pick the mistake that cost you the most games this week and work only on that for a few sessions. Then put it to the test at a local tournament.
